I have just completed a wedding ring commission for a client. She had some gold jewellery inherited from her deceased mother, which had too much emotional value to sell, but she did not want to wear the piece as it was. After weighing up the different possiblities in conversation, my client decided to re-purpose this gold and create a new ring, melting the gold to give it a new lease of life.
We re-used this emotionally charged raw material to make the wedding band. Together with some new gold, I melted down the jewellery and and cast it into sand. The result is a statement ring in 9ct yellow gold that contains many layers of history from my client's past. The texture of the sandcasting process is apparent, contrasting with smooth surfaces .
The ‘Histories’ ring celebrates this union with something new, made from something old : a beautiful symbol of love, renewal and remembrance.
